We use offshore investments to provide diversification and optimise risk-adjusted returns. To achieve our objectives, we partner with best-of-breed asset managers, experts in their field, to add the diversity and exposure to investment themes we consider appropriate. Our due diligence process emphasises the investment philosophies and processes of the prospective manager, and includes regular investment meetings to review our holdings and disciplined attention to risk management.

Offshore investment is a critical part of asset allocation. We invest offshore both to diversify risk and provide exposure to investment ideas we identify as attractive that may not be accessible through the South African market.
The large range of variables that need to be considered when making international investment decisions demands a vast resource of investment professionals in order to conduct a superior, share specific, international investment process across developed and developing markets and all their attendant currencies. We choose to rather avail ourselves of carefully selected pools of expertise. We act as a multi-manager of international fund managers to provide appropriate combinations of offshore assets that add the diversity and exposure to investment themes we consider appropriate and in accordance with our offshore strategy. Our offshore partners are selected on an objective basis and feature mostly independent, specialised and focused funds.
The assessment of global economic and market conditions we perform as part of our overall investment process determines our offshore strategy and asset allocation. We utilise quantitative tools to assist in screening for suitable opportunities, but ultimately the investment decision is based on fundamentals. Our due diligence pays particular attention to the investment philosophies and processes adopted by the investment houses. Fund and manager selection processes mirror the key tenets of our South African investment process, namely due diligence, regular investment meetings to review our holdings, and disciplined attention to risk management.
